Demand Is Not Your Problem. Capture Is.

There are two problems that look very similar from the outside and are fixed in opposite directions.

The first is not having demand

Nobody knows you, nobody asks, the phone does not ring. The work there is creating interest where none exists. It is slow, it is expensive, and it is the problem most marketing is built to solve.

The second is having demand and not capturing it

People do ask. There is real interest. But between somebody asking and somebody sitting in front of you, half of them fall out, and nobody knows exactly where.

Almost everything sold as marketing attacks the first problem. In businesses that have been running for years and get good results, it is almost always the second.

Why capture problems stay invisible

A demand problem announces itself. An empty pipeline is obvious and it is uncomfortable, so it gets attention.

A capture problem never shows up anywhere. The person who asked on Sunday night and got a reply on Tuesday does not write in to complain. They do not appear in a report. They simply do not come back, and the month gets recorded as one where there was less interest.

There was not less interest. There were fewer hours in which somebody could answer.

You cannot miss what you do not know you lost.

Why it is the cheaper problem

Fixing capture is cheaper than fixing demand, because you do not have to go and find anyone. They are already there. The work is making sure that the interest that already exists reaches a calendar.

Concretely, that is three things. Somebody answers, at any hour. That conversation separates the people who are curious about price from the people who have decided. And it ends with a specific time held, not with "we will be in touch."

If those three happen, most of what comes before them can be mediocre and it still works. If they do not, the best advertising in the country does not matter.
